What “Certified Translation” Means in the UK (and what you’ll receive)

In the UK, a certified translation is a translation accompanied by a declaration from the translator/agency confirming it is a true and accurate translation of the original. Your pack includes:

  • A statement of accuracy (“true and accurate translation of the original”).

  • The date of translation.

  • The translator/agency’s full name and signature.

  • The translator/agency’s contact details

You’ll receive a PDF with certification and, if needed, printed copies. Guidance from the UK’s professional bodies (CIOL/ITI/ATC) aligns to this practice.

Note: The UK does not operate a system of “sworn translators.” If a foreign authority explicitly requires a sworn translation, we’ll advise you on the correct route (e.g., an in-country sworn translator).

When You Need a Certified Translation (UK Examples)

You typically need a certified translation when submitting documents that are not in English or Welsh to UK bodies, for example:

  • UKVI/Home Office visas (e.g., Skilled Worker, Visitor visas).

  • Universities & regulators (e.g., degree certificates/transcripts; GMC for medical registration).

  • Courts & legal matters (witness statements, judgments, civil status docs).

  • Banks & employers, HM Passport Office, DVLA, local authorities (varies by organisation). (For government submissions, the same four certification elements apply.)

Certified vs Notarised vs Apostille vs “Sworn” — UK Explained

01

Certified translation (UK)

Translator/agency certifies accuracy (statement + date + name/signature + contact). Standard for UKVI/Home Office, courts, universities and banks.

02

Notarised translation

A notary public witnesses the translator’s declaration. Sometimes requested for overseas use.

03

Apostille/legalisation

The FCDO authenticates the notary’s signature for use in another country.

04

Sworn translation

No UK system of sworn translators; some civil-law countries require in-country sworn translators instead.

FAQs — Certified Translation UK

Do UK authorities really require certified translations?

Yes. If a document isn’t in English or Welsh, you must submit a full certified translation meeting GOV.UK’s four elements (accuracy statement, date, name/signature, contact details).

Qualified translators/companies commonly certify translations. In the UK (no sworn system), certification is provided by the translator/agency; some bodies prefer translators who are members of CIOL or ITI.

Some countries require notarised or sworn translations. We’ll confirm requirements and arrange notarisation and apostille if needed for overseas use.

For most UK authorities, clear scans/photos are acceptable. Originals may be needed only when the authority requests notarisation or physical inspection. Always follow the receiving body’s instructions.

Many do (e.g., GMC requires contact details, stamp and signature). Always check specific guidance; we align your pack accordingly.
