What is a “sworn translator”?
A sworn translator is a linguist formally appointed or authorised by a judicial or ministerial authority to produce translations that carry legal value in that jurisdiction.
France: sworn translators are judicial experts listed by each cour d’appel (Court of Appeal); their translations are considered official.
Spain: traductores/intérpretes jurados are appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; their stamped translations have official character.
Important for U.S. immigration: the U.S. does not have a “sworn translator” designation. For USCIS, any foreign-language document must include a full English translation with a translator’s certification of completeness, accuracy, and competence (a “certified translation”).
When do you need a sworn translator vs a certified translation?
You need a sworn translator when the destination authority explicitly requires a sworn/official translation produced by a court-appointed or ministerially authorised translator (common for civil registry filings, court procedures, notarial acts in parts of the EU).
You need a certified translation (not sworn) for USCIS and many other authorities that accept a translator’s certificate (statement of accuracy + competence).
